About Deposit Guide

Last updated: October 17, 2026

Deposit Guide publishes plain-language information about residential security deposits in the United States: how long a landlord has to return one, what can be deducted, and what a tenant can do next. We are an independent publisher, not a law firm, and we do not give legal advice.

What we publish

We publish two things.

The free pages on this site answer one question each, and anyone can read them without paying. Every guide page shows the date it was last reviewed; each state page names the statute it was checked against, and links to the official text wherever the legislature publishes it online.

The paid guide assembles the same research for one state into a single document you can work from: the return deadline, the deposit cap, the penalty for wrongful withholding, your filing-fee range, the small-claims limit where you live, a step-by-step process, an evidence checklist, and a demand-letter template that is blank on purpose — you fill it in yourself.

Who is responsible for this site

Deposit Guide is the publisher of everything on this site, and the publication is the party responsible for it. Pages do not carry individual bylines. The same organisation publishes the free pages and the paid guide, so a correction is made in one place rather than in two.

The legal figures on this site are built from the statute itself or from the state court or housing agency that administers it, and they are re-checked on a schedule. The method is set out in full on how we research and check our pages — including what we do not do.

How this site is funded

We sell a paid guide, and some pages link to paid templates from partners. Those links are marked, the price you pay is the same, and a commission never decides what a page says. Most pages on this site carry no partner link at all.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong, tell us. Email support@get-book.com with the page and, if you have it, the source that shows the correct position. When a figure is corrected, the page’s review date changes and the paid guide is corrected in the same pass — a page that is right and a guide that is wrong would be worse than either on its own.

Contact

Support, orders and refunds: support@get-book.com. What we can and cannot help with is set out on the contact page; payment terms are on Refund Policy and Terms of Service.

What we are not

This site provides general information for a general audience. We do not answer questions about your own situation, tell you whether you have a claim, review a letter before you send it, or predict what a court will do. If you need that kind of help, contact a licensed attorney in your state, your local legal aid organisation, or your state bar association’s lawyer referral service.
